Simmons Center specialists work closely with colleagues in related medical specialties to offer patients the full capabilities of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), a world-class academic health system, and to improve the care of people with interstitial lung disease. University of Pittsburgh researchers and clinicians at the center also work closely to translate basic research on IPF into new treatments that may save lives in the future. In cases where the disease progresses, Simmons Center specialists offer referral to UPMC's Lung Transplant Program for possible lung transplantation. UPMC's lung transplant program is one of the most experienced in the world, having performed more than 700 transplants since it was founded in 1982. |
